The mayor of Capulhuac, Selene Hernández Herrera (PT), has requested a temporary leave of 90 days due to personal matters, which has been unanimously approved by the Cabildo. This request comes amid accusations against her for alleged physical, verbal, and sexual violence toward a psychologist from the municipal DIF.
In an extraordinary session, the mayor presented the justification for her request but did not clarify whether the personal matters could be related to an investigation against her. The leave is based on the need to take time off to address personal issues and will be assumed by the third councilor, Sarita Arellano Hernández, during Selene Hernández's absence.
A worker from the municipal DIF, identified as Miriam “N,” has filed a criminal complaint against Hernández Herrera for alleged physical and sexual assaults with the Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM). The accusation was initially spread on social media, leading to citizen protests that resulted in the occupation of the Municipal Palace.
Although the mayor on leave has not commented on the case, the parties that supported her, PT and Morena, have condemned her behavior and called for investigations into the matter. The president of the Political Coordination Board of the local Congress has mentioned that there are currently no proceedings against her and has indicated that it will be the relevant authorities who will determine responsibilities.
